About Susan Romer

New Susan portrait cropSUSAN ROMER  is a retired attorney and practicing consultant known not only for her legal skills but also for her keen understanding of the emotional issues and pressures on all parties involved in an adoption.

She was the managing partner of the Law Offices of Adams and Romer in San Francisco and Santa Rosa, CA, for almost 25 years before she retired from the firm. The firm continues as the Law Offices of Adams, Romer, Stoeckenius and Wotherspoon, now under the legal expertise of Karin Stoeckenius, and Holly Wotherspoon.

Concern for birth mothers and adoptive parents alike has been her key to successful open adoptions. She was an active member of the Academy of California Adoption Lawyers and a board member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.

She created a non-profit organization, On Your Feet Foundation, Northern California, in 2008 to help birth mothers get back on their feet after placement. She is a co-author of an article in Adoptive Families Magazine, November 2013, which identified needs of birth mothers after a child is placed for adoption and for years after. This article was based on the research of Dr. David Brodzinsky who did the study to evaluate the effect of the services offered by the foundation. This magazine is a great resource for adopting parents.

Susan graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University, earned her Masters in Teaching from Northwestern University, her PhD from University of California, Berkeley, and her JD from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She was a recipient of the US Congressional “Angel in Adoption” award, nominated by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

Susan and her husband have a blended family of two daughters and three sons and their spouses, and nine grandchildren, including one grandchild who joined the family through adoption.
